Short history of Bernisse

Location of Abbenbroek

The municipality Bernisse is situated on Voorne-Putten on the south side of the Netherlands (Holland). This very atrractive recreation area lies between the summery coast of Zeeland and the the activities of the world port Rotterdam. The municipality Bernisse exists since 1 January 1980, when it was formed out of the old municipalities Abbenbroek, Oudenhoorn and Zuidland and parts of the municipalities Geervliet (including Simonshaven) and Heenvliet. The municipality Bernisse has a total surface of 6,858 hectares. The municipality and its recreation area have been called to the 7 kilometres long old river course the Bernisse. This important recreation area is a water pace between the Spui and the Voedings- kanaal. The recreation area is about 300 hectares large and has been formed by several lakes and larger and smaller creeks where you can go fishing, surfing and swimming. You can truly enjoy nature and explore the extended flora and fauna of Bernisse. There are several small beaches and jetties for small boats. High-speed motorboats are not permited however. Bernisse has outstanding routes for bicycling along the rivers of this superb recreation area.

Cores business Bernisse´s core business has an agrarian nature. In Heenvliet and Zuidland several company areas have established. Other company establishments are mainly operative in transport, construction industry, wholesale trade and service business. The establishment possibilities in Bernisse are limited. The municipality has a so-called 'small cores policy', which increases her growth-task. The centres of the historical cores Abbenbroek, Geervliet, Heenvliet, Oudenhoorn, Simonshaven and Zuidland are situated around monumental churches, characteristic market squares and mills, which are open for visitors on Saterdays. You can also visit the unique monument the Ruin of Ravesteijn in medieval borough Heenvliet, which is owned by the Foundation 'Stede and Vrye Heerlijkheyt'. The department of Civil Affairs is open from Monday to Friday from 08.30 - 12.00. This department is also open on Tuesday night from 18.00 - 20.00. It is recommended to make an appointment.
